The Richard Dreyfuss Connection: There She Blows!

Let Her Blow, or not . . .
When I was in middle school, I had a science project to create and make a volcano erupt. I remember thinking how cool it would be to make a volcano that looked like the mountain on Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I could be the Richard Dreyfuss of the fifth grade!
To my dismay, my parents assured me that I was no Richard Dreyfuss, and wouldn’t allow me to fill my room with mud and branches, so . . . paper mache it was!
Fast Forward - I show up in class on the “Day of Eruption”. I prepped my “No Encounter of Any Kind” Volcano on the front table. First I poured in the baking soda, then next the orange tinted vinegar. Please don’t ask how I tinted it orange. No, just don't ask!
So I waited, and looked over my instructions.
. . . and waited, looking at my teacher in disbelief.
. . . and waited, with no solution in sight.
I was in total disbelief! Then without notice . . . my volcano spewed out orange homemade lava!
Teachable Moments
Although I followed the instructions, it was evident that my efforts produced something . . . a problem. My volcano didn’t erupt as was described in the instructions - I followed them to the letter. What I came away with was the understanding that even though we may follow instruction, a problem can arise regardless of our direction. It was a teachable moment. Someone once said that it's more important how we handle what happens to us than what happens to us.
The Strength in the Solution
Problems happen to us all. Sometimes they arise quickly, and other times they are like my volcano, slowly arising. What we have learned is that the strength you gain in discovering a solution, supersedes the fact that you realize that you have a problem.
When we realize that the solution to a problem has moved from the primary focus to a great possibility, we grow. Our abilities develop to recognize that the solution was right before our eyes in the first place.
When you have a problem, there are three questions you should ask yourself:
- Can I fix this problem?
- If not, WHO can fix this problem?
- What can I learn from this problem?
The third question influences the answer to the first two if another problem should ever arise.
*By the way I used all of my mom's McCormick Orange Food Dye. Don't get it on white pants, and that's all I have to say about that!
