B-AHHH!!!!
The joy of free-flowing youthful excitement and anticipation. Childhood wonder. The wait for school to be out for the holidays, then the wait for Christmas eve, then the wait to fall asleep and then… you can’t sleep. Bah! Dad has told you a hundred times
| “Santa will NOT stop here if you’re awake!”
Of course you finally drift off amid dreams of the mountain of toys you are sure will magically be under the tree in the morning. And the toys; you’ve begged, pleaded, prayed, done everything your parents have asked of you, just to make sure you’re on Santa’s “Nice” list.
Favorite Movies and Chaos
Then add in the innumerable family traditions; from holiday movies to a special breakfast for Christmas morning.
(At my house it’s watching “A Christmas Story” and cinnamon rolls, hot chocolate and leftovers from the day before-i.e. it was easy to do amid the chaos of the morning!)
All of it adds up to what we have today, a rich emulsion of ancient traditions, current trends and family.
How'd It Start?! Santa 101
A quick bit of history:
Did you know the story of Santa Claus is believed to be derived from the history of Bishop Nicholas of Smyrna?
He lived in the 4th century A.D and was supposedly a very wealthy and generous man who would throw gifts into the houses of poor children to help lift their spirits. He was later titled Saint Nicholas and eventually became the patron saint of children and seafarers.
The story of Santa Claus has evolved and changed, each culture in history adopting this part and that, molding the story and weaving into the fabric of their community. Which brings us back to today.
Who Do You Do?
We all have our traditions, whatever they may be, that make the holidays special. When we spend the time with our friends, family ,and colleagues; we build those traditions, create new memories and add strength to the relationships in our lives.
